As the end of 2006 was celebrated, reviewed and re-reviewed, I started to look over my own achievements and results both in my business and professional life. It was…interesting. Like many of those profiled, people had come and gone from my life and yet I too found the strength and inner courage to keep going.
If you’re like the rest of us, you probably started 2006 with the best of intentions and the most well laid plans just like I did. Sometimes though, despite even the best efforts, the end of the year reveals that many started new businesses, failed and rose to start anew.
Many had experienced difficulties and miscommunications in marriages, child rearing, weight loss and a hundred other things. Some learned from their experiences, got up and after dusting themselves off they bravely tried again. There were others who didn’t because of fear, overwhelm, lack of support or total disillusionment.
As the yearly count down continued I saw certain aspects of my life reflected in the faces of others who were also looking back.ÂIt’s hard not to beat yourself up in areas where you may have fallen short, and I’m guilty of that sometimes as well. What I know for sure is that taking things out on yourself serves no good purpose.
If however you’re the type of person who sat around the entire year watching totally unrealistic soap operas or admiring the view with your buddies while waiting on your lives to get better, there’s not too much I can say for you all other than, "good luck with that".
For the rest of us, does it matter if you didn’t get everything you wanted in 2006? Does it count if you got close? If you got some things right and had to work smarter at others? What if you had to delay some of the plans and achievements you were counting on last year? Does that invalidate them? I don’t think so.
It’s been said before that the one thing you can count on in life is that it will change. Depending on your vantage point, I guess that could be a good thing or a bad thing. Rather than tear yourself (or others) down, why not use 2007 to build up instead?
You can have the things you want in life and it really doesn’t have to take forever… good things can happen quickly with the right mindset and positively focused action. So I guess what I’m trying to say is this, don’t let the person deciding you can’t have it in 2007…be YOU!
